Flat foot reconstruction - patient tips to make the first months easier.

Flat foot reconstruction requires a "moon-boot" for 10 to 14 weeks after surgery. The first 6 weeks are non-weight bearing.
See Flat Foot Reconstruction
in the TREATMENTS menu for detailed information.
To make this period easier, here in her own words are some tips and suggestion from Geraldine, a nurse who underwent this surgery in late 2019.
Pre-operative planning:
- Raise the end of your bed or mattress to assist in elevating your foot post-op.
- Insert a bed cradle to keep the blankets off the operative foot.
- Obtain knee walker or crutches, walking frame, walking stick, shower stool (a second chair to sit on when drying yourself outside of the shower is very helpful).
- A toilet raiser or handles to help get off the toilet.
- A Handy Bar handle (see image above) to place in the door latch of the car to help get out of the car.
Using a knee walker:
- A flat shoe that covers and protects your toes on the unaffected foot helps prevent injury to that foot.
- A flat slide-on shoe is easier for those quick visits to the toilet and to remove before showering.
Post-operative:
- A pillow between your legs can help protect your other leg from the "moon-boot".
Shower:
- Hand-held flexible shower head.
- A small plastic stool to put foot up on in shower.
- Make sure everything you need is within reach.
Car travel:
- Slide in the back seat of the car with pillows to support your back and operative leg, remember to always use your seat belt.
